High Time for Legal Weed Companies to Change Packaging Practices: Consumers

Regulations and economic pressures are to blame, cannabis producers say.

Despite the historical intersection of pot-smoking and environmentalism, producers of legal cannabis use an excessive amount of plastic to package their products, raising alarm among many cannabis consumers.

That’s according to an exposé from Mic, which names the driving forces behind the plastic usage before exploring potential solutions.

The article also cites a couple of reports that uncovered some damning statistics.

For example, one analysis found that a sample of cannabis products used plastic packaging containing four to 30 times its contents. A separate report found that one gram of weed can be contained in up to 70 grams of plastic, a higher plastic-per-unit figure than most other industries.

For their part, cannabis makers say they want to do better, but are having trouble navigating the regulations, economic pressures and other practical issues which are keeping them from being greener.

Though some companies are trying to hurdle these roadblocks with innovative packaging solutions, “the most interesting projects may need a mixture of consumer advocacy and pure luck to take off.”
