PA Options for Wellness (PAOFW) has tapped Kinsley Energy Systems to supply a high-efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) and chilled water system to power its new medicinal cannabis research lab, Harrisburg, PA-based PAOFW announced in December.

PAOFW is a medical cannabis research and education company founded in 2014. Kinsley Energy Systems, based in East Grandby, CT, is a provider and distributor of energy systems such as Kohler Power Systems throughout the Northeast United States.

PAOFW’s Lab Energy Cogeneration Plant will be fueled by liquified natural gas (LNG) and will operate independently of the electric grid. It will be the sole source of electric power and thermal energy for the PAOFW medicinal cannabis cultivation facility.

Kinsley will provide a package consisting of four cogeneration units, backup boilers, high-efficiency magnetic bearing electric chillers and closed-circuit cooling towers with associated pumping systems.

The research facility broke ground in August 2021 and is expected to come fully online in January 2022. The choice of a CHP system was made to reduce energy costs and cut down carbon emissions, PAOFW CEO Tom Trite said.

“We selected Kinsley because they offered competitive cost, valuable technical support during project development and local service throughout the plant’s life,” he said.

PAOFW was awarded one of the first Medical Cannabis Clinical Registrant permits issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Health in 2019. Working in collaboration with their Accredited Clinical Research Center, Penn State University and Hershey Medical Center, PAOFW has established research as a primary mission, emphasizing individual patient care, treatment and outcomes in developing their medicinal cannabis projects.
