BUZZ SESSION: Employers’ Opinions Diverge on Letting Staff Partake on the Job

Question

What Are Your Rules for ‘Enjoying the Product’ for On-Shift Employees?

  • We ask them to enjoy product once safely home. — Devin Aracena, Canvast Supply Co., Nashville, TN
  • Don’t over-medicate but take care of yourself first. — Kayla Brown, Missouri Health and Wellness, Sedalia, MO
  • Per Ohio regulations, no cannabis can be consumed on the premises. — Meghan Porter, Ancient Roots, Wilmington, OH
  • Our team is actively serving cannabis to consumers, so we ask that they do not consume while on the job. If there’s leftovers for the staff, they can certainly take some home. — Chelsi Katz, Irie Weddings & Events, Denver, CO
  • As long as they can do their jobs, of course. Would you ask the same question to someone who takes anti-depressants? Require that they don’t take them during working hours? Looked at this way, it’s not “enjoying the product”—do you ask people that take Tylenol if they “enjoy the product?” — Sylvain Gaudreau, Canasyga Outdoor Culture, Saint Wenceslas, QC, Canada
  • Rules in Oregon prohibit it unless the employee has a medical card. — Marianne Cursetjee, Alibi Cannabis, Portland, OR
  • Only off-the-clock and off company property. Do not work visibly/noticeably medicated. No inebriation allowed. — Andrea Rowe, Swade Cannabis, St. Louis, MO
  • Handle your business and we will get along. — Matt Storey, Charlotte’s Web, Denver, CO
  • As long as your work is quality and on time, that’s all we track. — Justin Kahn, Reepher, Salt Lake City, UT
  • No consumption of THC products while clocked in. — Kate Petersen, Lume Cannabis, Houghton, MI
  • It’s encouraged—provided you’re responsible and can still properly perform your duties. Philip Papendick, Shwifty Hemp Co., Tallahassee, FL
I’m the only employee. I’m never off the clock 🙂 — Ryan Jones, Magma, Redwood City, CA
  • Employees cannot be high on the job. It’s too dangerous if glass gets broken. — Anthony Carnevale, Clean Piece, Toronto, ON, Canada
  • Not at work, but employees are eligible for discounts at select dispensaries if they get a medical card. — Michael Smith, Advanced Biomedics. Lafayette, LA
  • No one’s allowed to consume any kind of cannabis during work hours. — Charlotte Faye Mangabat, Caliva, San Mateo, CA
  • We have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. We’ve found if we let employees smoke as much as they want, they get too damn stoned and can’t work. If they take a puff before a shift or on lunch, that’s fine as long as it’s on their time and they can still function! — Elise Timoney, SierraKind, Grass Valley, CA
  • Massachusetts guidelines prohibit consumption on-site. However, we make sure to frequently give quality control samples to our employees at the end of day while still adhering to the CCC guidance. — Katie Harevich, Good Feels, Medway, MA
