The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) has selected and granted medical cannabis business licenses to multiple applicants after a voting process on Thursday.

The AMCC collaborated with the University of South Alabama (USA) to manage the application review and evaluator recruitment for all 90 applicants, reports Advance Local Alabama. Utilizing 66 experienced evaluators with relevant expertise, USA assessed eight scoring categories: Financial Ability, Business/Management Approach, Operations Plans & Procedures, Facility Suitability & Infrastructure, Security Plan, Personnel, Quality Control & Testing, and Marketing & Advertising.

After being informed by the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission about score calculation discrepancies, the University of South Alabama initiated evaluations led by two senior-level internal accountants who were not part of the initial tabulation process.

Post-award licensing procedures will be reset in terms of timelines. Successful license awardees must submit the necessary license fee within 14 days, while unsuccessful applicants can request an investigative hearing before the Commission for reconsideration.

Per regulations set by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, physicians are permitted to begin certifying patients for medical cannabis once business licenses are distributed. Patients need a qualifying condition and a recommendation from a certified physician to be eligible for medical cannabis.

Although the Commission is constrained by statutory limitations on the number of licenses, it plans to launch a second round of license offerings for various categories.
